Pretoria is best known for its annual display of purple flowers in late spring when the Jacaranda lined avenues are a blase of blooms. It was founded in 1855 by the Boer leader Marthinus Pretorius as the new capital of the South African Republic. Having Trekked all the way from The Cape, he felt it was far enough away from the meddling English Governor of the Cape, and Pretoria was seen as the end of the Boers’ settlement movements of the Great Trek. It has some wonderful Colonial architecture and is rich in the history of South Africa, both Afrikaner and the indigenous African inhabitants.
South Africa’s Union Buildings is the official Seat of The National Government and has been declared a South African National Heritage Site.
Paul Kruger House
Paul Kruger was a resistance leader and key figure in the Transvaal war against the British in 1880/1881. In 1882 at the age Of 57 Kruger Was Elected President of The Transvaal and later took up residence at Kruger House In Pretoria. This is an historical, well preserved home of the era.
The impressive Voortrekker Monument is situated in a nature reserve in the Pretoria (Tshwane) area. It commemorates the Pioneering spirit of Afrikaners and is one of the most popular heritage sites in South Africa
The Cullinan diamond mine has produced some of the most perfect and alluring gemstones ever seen by man., such as the spectacular Cullinan Diamond. Some of these glamorous gems have inspired myths, legends, fables and romances and have been possessed by stars and royalty alike. The Cullinan Diamond was the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found, weighing 3,106.75 carats. The Great Star of Africa is displayed in the head of England's royal Sceptre while the Lesser Star of Africa, or Cullinan II weighing 317.4 carats, forms part of the British crown jewels' Imperial State Crown. This tour covers the history of the mine, mining methods and the geological processes that are responsible for the creation of diamonds.
